File Name Too Long

Issue/Question

When I try to add a file to the Shared or Personal Drive I get an error stating that the filename is too long.

Environment

  • Windows

Cause

Windows can handle file names of up to 260 characters in length, including the path to the file. If a file is nested within many folders, and/or if the file has a long name, the character limit is most likely exceeded.

Resolution

  1. Try shortening the name of the file that you need to save on the Shared or Personal Drive.
  2. Move the folder to another location in the Shared or Personal Drive so that it is not nested within as many folders.
  3. Create a new nesting of folders within the Shared or Personal Drive for specific files and keep all folders separated
