Compressing Pictures in Microsoft Office


How do I reduce the size of a Microsoft Office file that contains several images?

Adding images to Microsoft Office files copies the image into the document and increases the document's size by the picture's size. This can make it difficult to share documents.


  1. Click on an image to select it.
  2. Click the Format tab under the Picture Tools section of the ribbon.
  3. Click Compress Pictures.
  4. Uncheck Apply only to this picture to compress all images in the document.
  5. Select the desired resolution. The lower the resolution, the smaller the file size will be, however, images will loose some sharpness.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Save the file.
