Printing Failure After Windows Update

Issue/Question

My PC recently installed a Windows update and now every print job fails and/or crashes the application from which I print.

Environment

  • Windows 10

Cause

On Tuesday 6/9/2020, Microsoft pushed out a new Windows update that inadvertently caused printing issues across many printer manufacturer's driver software. Manufacturers included Toshiba, HP, Panasonic, Canon, Brother, and Ricoh, among possible others. The result is printing errors, crashing, and otherwise failing print jobs from virtually every application capable of printing on the affected PC.

Resolution

In some cases, simply downloading and installing all available Windows updates will resolve this issue. However, in many cases a manual install of specific versions of Windows KB updates must be performed.
  1. Press (Windows Key) + S OR right-click the start menu and select Search to begin a Windows search.
  2. Search for and run About Your PC.
  3. At the bottom of the page, look for Windows Specification > Version.
  4. Based on your Windows version number, open one of the following links:
  5. Under Updates, locate the title 2020-06 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1xxx for x64-based Systems.
  6. To the far right of this update, click Download.
  7. Once the file download is complete, run the installer.
  8. When prompted, begin the install.
  9. After some time, the process will complete and you will be prompted to restart the PC.
  10. After the updates are fully installed during the reboot process, printing functionality will be restored.
