Resolving Failed to Start Error

Issue/Question

After I installed IBM SPSS Statistics from the software center I received the error message:

The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail.

Environment

• Windows 7

Cause

The computer is missing the correct C++ runtime components for the type of system. (x86 or x64).

Resolution

Install Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable libraries required by IBM SPSS Statistics.

1. Click the Start Button.
2. Select My Computer.
3. Browse to the product installation directory.
   • SPSS 20: 'C:\Program Files\IBM\SPSS\Statistics\20\VC9'.
   • SPSS 21: 'C:\Program Files\IBM\SPSS\Statistics\21\VC9'.
   • SPSS 22: 'C:\Program Files\IBM\SPSS\Statistics\22\VC9'.
4. Open the VC9 folder.
5. Depending on your system (x86 or 64x) you will select either vcredist_x86.exe or vcredist_x64.exe.
6. Right-click vcredist_x(x86 OR x64).exe.
7. Select Run as administrator.
8. The Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable libraries will now install.
