How do I change the extension of a file?

Environment

  • Windows 7+

Cause

In order to change the file extension of a file you must have the File name extensions view enabled. Also, you must rename the file to a compatible file type (e.g., changing a .jpg to a .png or a .doc to a .docx) in order to prevent the file from becoming unusable.

Resolution

  1. Right-click the file.
  2. Select Rename.
  3. Replace the existing file extension with the new extension type.
  4. Press Enter.
Note: A rename confirmation box will open.
  5. Click Yes.
