Prioritizing Network Connections Based on Physical Location

Instruction for changing how Macs prioritize network connections based upon a user's preference.

Issue/Question

I would like my Mac to prefer one connection over another while at work, but reverse the preference when at home or elsewhere.

Resolution

  1. Click (Apple menu).
  2. Select System Preferences... .
  3. Click Network.
  4. Click the Location dropdown menu.
  5. Select Edit Locations... .
  6. Click .
  7. Enter your current location's name (e.g. Home, Hotel, Work).
  8. Click Done.
  9. Click Apply.
  10. Click (Service Actions settings).
  11. Select Set Service Order... .
  12. Drag the connections as desired for your current location.
  13. Click OK.
  14. Click Apply.
  15. Repeat the steps above for each location you want to prioritize connection options differently.
     Note: You will need to manually apply the location in the dropdown menu in order for the connections to be prioritized as desired.
