Troubleshooting Mouse/Keyboard Issues

Summary

Information on troubleshooting problems with keyboard and mice.

Body

Issue/Question

My mouse or keyboard is behaving strangely or has become inoperable.

Resolution

When a mouse or keyboard is not working optimally, there are several options that may resolve the problem.

  • If the device is wireless, ensure that it has charged batteries, is synced and that the wireless receiver is plugged in.
  • If the mouse is an optical or laser mouse, check the underside of the mouse to ensure that dust is not blocking any sensors.
  • Try reseating the device by unplugging the mouse and plugging it back in.
  • Try to plug the device/receiver into a different USB port on the computer.
    Note:
It can take 10-15 seconds for Windows to recognize the device after being plugged in.
  • Restart the computer.

If none of these options resolve the issue, the device itself may need to be replaced. Please contact the ITS Service Desk.
