General Education Assessment Requirement

WKU’s general education assessment reporting documents what students are learning and how faculty use the findings to improve the Colonnade Program. This work supports expectations established by the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

CPE’s Expectations

CPE expects Kentucky public institutions to assess general education student learning outcomes using nationally accepted standards and in accordance with SACSCOC accreditation expectations. Institutions must show how their outcomes relate to the faculty-developed Statewide General Education Student Learning Outcomes and provide evidence of ongoing assessment on a three-year cycle. This process supports comparable learning expectations for students transferring between institutions.

SACSCOC Expectations

SACSCOC expects institutions to establish student learning outcomes, assess the extent to which students achieve them, and provide evidence of improvement based on analysis of the results. Institutions must also identify college-level general education competencies and determine the extent to which students attain them.

Assessment reporting therefore needs to connect the intended learning outcomes with appropriate evidence of student achievement and explain how the institution uses the findings.
