Issue/Question

How do I export a test from Blackboard to a text document?

Environment

  • Blackboard
    • Original
    • Ultra

Cause

Currently there is no way to directly export a test from Blackboard into a text document. However, this can be done in a roundabout manner via Respondus.

Resolution

The current Respondus version (4.0) is not fully supported with Blackboard Ultra - retrieval of exam questions may not function as intended. The instructor is responsible for verifying exported exam data for accuracy.
  1. Follow these instructions to install Respondus.
  2. Follow these instructions on Setting Up and Configuring Respondus to make the connection to Blackboard.
  3. After Respondus has been installed & configured, open the software.
  4. Click the Retrieval & Reports tab.
  5. Click Retrieve Questions
  6. Verify the server settings in the Wizard window. They should be set for the WKU Blackboard server: https://wku.blackboard.com.
  7. Click Next
  8. Click OK on pop-up window to begin login process
  9. Log into Blackboard by entering WKU email address and password.
  10. Complete multi-factor authentication when prompted.
Note: You must sign into Blackboard using MFA each time you wish to use Respondus.
  11. Once you see your Blackboard courses listed, click Continue After Login (upper-right corner).
  12. Click OK.
  13. In the appropriate drop-downs, select the following:
    1. The course from which you wish to retrieve questions.
    2. Which exam (test/survey/pool) you wish to pull from.
    3. Enter a name for the file you are creating.
  14. Click Next. Respondus will contact Blackboard to retrieve the information you have requested.
  15. A pop-up will appear once the file has been saved. Click OK
  16. Click Finish once the task has completed successfully.
  17. Go to the Respondus Start tab.
  18. Click Open.
  19. Select the file you just named and created.
  20. Click Open.
Note: There will not be a notification telling you that the file has been opened.
  21. Go to the Preview & Publish tab.
  22. Click Print Options
  23. Select the format you would like to print or save
  24. Configure desired options for creating a header or randomizing questions.
