Moderating New List Members

Issue/Question

Messages from a new list member are not delivering.

Cause

Mailing lists can be configured to moderate postings from new members. Messages can be held, rejected, or discarded.

Resolution

To allow messages from new members to deliver automatically:

  1. Login to the ListServ administrator interface: http://lists.wku.edu/mailman/admin/[listname].
  2. Click Privacy options.
  3. Click Sender filters.
  4. For the first item, titled By default, should new list member postings be moderated?, select No.
  5. Click Submit Your Changes.

To change how messages from new members are moderated:

  1. Login to the ListServ administrator interface: http://lists.wku.edu/mailman/admin/[listname].
  2. Click Privacy options.
  3. Click Sender filters.
  4. For the first row, titled By default, should new list member postings be moderated?, select Yes.
  5. For the second row, titled Action to take when a moderated member posts to the list, choose the desired option.
    • Hold: messages are placed in the pending moderator requests section of the administrator site.
    • Reject: messages are returned to the sender, with whatever message is included in the third row, titled Text to include in any rejection notice to be sent to moderated members who post to this list.
    • Discard: messages are immediately deleted by the ListServ. No notification is sent to the sender, nor the list administrator. This choice is not recommended.
  6. Click Submit Your Changes.
