Alternative Text of Images Should Not Be Repeated as Text

Issue/Question

When I run a Page Check I get the following Minor Problem:

Alternative text of images should not be repeated as text

Environment

  • Omni CMS

Cause

Omni CMS Final Checks evaluate all code on a page and detect accessibility issues not meeting WCAG 2.0 (Level AA) standards

It detected the page contains an image with alternative description text repeated immediately after it.  It is unnecessary and potentially confusing to have alternative text for a link or image to be repeated in text adjacent to the link or image since it would be read twice by a screen reader.

Resolution

Update your images Alternative Description and/or remove the repeated text that follows the image.

  1. Click  Yellow Light Bulb to check out page.
  2. Click  Edit tab.
  3. Click  Edit button on content area where styles are located.
  4. Click on image identified in Source Code portion of the error.
  5. Click Image button in WYSIWYG toolbar to bring up Insert/Edit Image dialog.
  6. Update Alternative Description text so it does not match text that follows.
Note: Be as descriptive as possible. Rather than a short description like "students walking", try to describe the entire scene and instead say "Two WKU students walking through a shaded part of main campus on a sunny day."
  7. Click Save.
  8. Select any redundant text that follows the image and remove it.
  9. Save page.
  10. Click the Publish button to run the accessibility final check again. When the issue is resolved it will no longer display in the accessibility check.
