Restarting an iPad / iPhone

Issue/Question

My iPad / iPhone needs to be restarted/rebooted. How do I do this?

Environment

  • Apple iPad or iPhone
    • iOS
    • iPadOS

Resolution

Restarting and iPad / iPhone with a Home Button

  1. Press and hold the power button for a few seconds.
  2. Wait until you see Slide to Power Off appear on your screen.
  3. Swipe to slide the Power Off slider.
  4. Wait a few seconds for the device to fully power off.
  5. Press the power button again and wait for your device to turn on.
  6. You will have to enter your passcode at start up, even if you usually use a fingerprint ID.

Note: If the device is unresponsive and you cannot get it to power off in this manner, you may need to perform a hard reset. To perform a hard reset, follow these instructions:

  1. Hold down the home button as well as the power button.
  2. Keep both buttons held until the Apple logo appears.
  3. Let go of the buttons and wait while your device completes it's start up sequence.
  4. You will have to enter your passcode at start up, even if you usually use a fingerprint ID.

 

Restarting an iPad or iPhone with Face ID

  1. Press and hold the power button and one of the volume buttons for a few seconds.
  2. Wait until you see Slide to Power Off appear on your screen.
  3. Swipe to slide the Power Off slider.
  4. Wait a few seconds for the device to fully power off.
  5. Press the power button again and wait for your device to turn on.
  6. You will have to enter your passcode at start up, even if you usually use Face ID.

  1. Press the Volume Up button for one second and release it. 
  2. Press the Volume Down button for one second and release it. 
  3. Press and hold the Power button for five seconds until the Apple logo appears.
