Running Out of Local Disk Space in Windows

Issue/Question

When I'm using my Windows computer, I receive the following message:

You are running out of disk space on Local Disk (C:).

Cause

The hard drive disk of the Windows computer is almost full.

Resolution

Start by emptying the Recycle Bin.

Free up disk space by uninstalling old applications (see Related Articles), documents, videos, and images.

If you have OneDrive installed, you can optionally set one or more OneDrive folders to Online Only to save space by performing the following steps:

  1. Open File Explorer and navigate to your OneDrive folder.
  2. Locate the folder you want to make online only.
  3. Right-click the folder.
  4. From the context menu, select Free up space.
  5. Wait a few moments.  The folder will now show a cloud icon, indicating it is online only and files are not stored locally.
  6. Files in this folder will be downloaded on demand when you open them, saving local disk space.
