Why do I hear a beeping sound when I start to dial an off-campus number from my office phone?

After dialing 91, you may hear a beeping sound. This is the off-campus or external dial tone. The external dial tone indicates the phone is ready for a full phone number rather than just a 5-digit extension. Continue to dial the full phone number to be connected.
