Creating a Shortcut to Shared Drives (Windows)

Issue/Question

How do I create a shortcut to a shared drive instead of mapping it?

Environment

  • Microsoft Windows

Resolution

Note: These instructions will only work for a computer on WKU's network. For computers off campus, you must first be connected through the WKU VPN.

  1. Right-click on the location where you want to create the shortcut, e.g. the Desktop.
  2. Select New.
  3. Click Shortcut.
  4. Enter the location of the shared folder in the text box. See the related article Mapping Network Drives (Windows) for each drive's address.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Enter a name for your shortcut.
  7. Click Finish.

Note: You may be prompted for login credentials when using this shortcut. If so, enter ad\[yourNetID] for the username and the corresponding password.
