Displaying Disk Usage and Availability

Issue/Question

How can I see how much space is in use on my hard drive and how much free space I have?

Environment

  • macOS

WKU-Owned Mac

  1. Open the Self-Service app.
  2. Click Your Scripts.
  3. Locate Check My Storage and click Execute Now.
  4. Within a few minutes a window will appear explaining that a scan of the computer's drive will occur.
  5. Click Continue.
  6. When the scan completes, two text documents will save to your Desktop and open. One is a listing of the largest 50 folders on the entire drive. The other lists the largest 50 folders within your account's home folder.

macOS 13 (Ventura) and Newer

  1. Click (Apple menu) in the top left corner of the screen.
  2. Select System Settings.
  3. Click General.
  4. Select Storage.
  5. A general overview will display, including how much space is in use by category, how much is available, as well as recommendations from Apple for saving space. 

macOS 12 (Monterey) or Older

  1. Click (Apple menu) in the top left corner of the screen.
  2. Select About This Mac.
  3. Click the Storage tab.
  4. A bar indicating how much space is in use and how much is available will display.
