Issue/Question
I am no longer able to control my device due to a full screen notification and am being prompted to contact “Microsoft Support” or a similar entity at a specific number to prevent data loss OR I keep receiving unwanted notifications related to virus protection, advertisements, or other unsolicited offers. How do I prevent these notifications?
Environment
Cause
Some websites will prompt you for permission to send notifications via your web browser. Allowing notifications from unsafe websites can lead to issues with notification browser hijacking and unwanted notification spam.
Resolution
To prevent these notifications from appearing in the future, you will need to modify the Notification Settings within your web browser.
If you are prompted to contact “Microsoft Support” or a similar entity via a full screen notification and no longer have direct control of your device, attempt pressing
ALT+F4 (Windows) or
COMMAND+W (Mac) to force close your active browser window. If this does not close the full screen notification, you may need to force shut down your machine by pressing the power button.
Do NOT call the number on your screen,
contact the ITS Service Desk.
