Computer Freezing When Waking or Unlocking

Issue/Question

When I wake my Mac from sleep and enter my username and password, it does not indicate that the credentials are wrong, but it will not log in.

Environment

macOS Mojave (10.14)
- Security Update 2021-04 installed
- AD-bound login account (WKU NetID and password)

Cause

The security update 2021-04 for Mojave released in May 2021 by Apple includes a bug that incorrectly prevents devices from unlocking with Active Directory accounts.

Resolution

Short-Term Workaround

A system file can be edited to disable the bug. However, it must be edited by an account not affected by the bug. To have this done, please contact the ITS Service Desk or submit a service request.

Long-Term Solution

Updating the OS to a new version (Catalina (10.15) or Big Sur (11)), if possible, will resolve the issue.

Click Get / Download / Install
