Turning Off Smart Quotes in Word

Issue/Question

How do I disable the automatic "smart quotes" feature of Word?

Environment

  • Word for Microsoft 365
  • Office 2019

Cause

By default, Microsoft Word replaces straight single (') and double (") quotation marks with rounded "smart" quotes, but when cut and pasted into other applications, these may not display properly.

Resolution

  1. Click File.
  2. Select Options.
  3. Click Proofing.
  4. Select AutoCorrect Options.
  5. Select the AutoFormat As You Type tab.
  6. Uncheck "Straight quotes" with "smart quotes" box.
  7. Click the AutoFormat tab.
  8. Uncheck "Straight quotes" with "smart quotes" box.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Click OK.
