Issue/Question
My iOS 9 (or later) device seems to be using more data than normal. What could be a possible cause?
Environment
Cause
WiFi Assist is a feature within iOS 9 that allows your iOS device to automatically switch to your data connection if the current WiFi connection is unreliable or inconsistent without a connection loss. There is concern that the automatic switching to data could cause spikes in data usage, which could lead to additional charges to your cellular bill.
WiFi Assist will not automatically switch to cellular if you are roaming. It only works when you have applications running in the foreground and doesn’t activate with background downloading of content. Lastly, WiFi Assist doesn’t activate with some third-party apps that stream audio or video, or download attachments, like an email app, as they might use large amounts of data.
Resolution
You can disable WiFi assist to see if it helps with your data usage.
- From the home screen, open the Settings application.
- Tap Cellular.
- Scroll to the very bottom of the screen until you find the option for WiFi Assist.
- Tap the switch to turn off and disable this feature.
