How do I reset the NVRAM?

Environment

  • macOS

Cause

If you are experiencing issues with speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, or received recent kernel panic information you might need to reset the NVRAM on you computer.

Resolution

  1. Force turn off the computer by holding the power button for about 10 seconds.
  2. Turn the Mac back on.
  3. Immediately press and hold these keys simultaneously:
    • Option
    • Command (⌘)
    • P
    • R
  4. The Mac will light up the screen, begin booting, then reboot.
  5. When the screen lights up again, release the keys.

Note: If you are using a Windows keyboard you will press the ALT key instead of Option.
