Switching Out of S Mode on Windows 10

Issue/Question

I can't install applications from other sources than the Microsoft Application Store because of S Mode on Windows 10. How do I switch out of S mode on my Windows 10 machine?

Environment

  • Windows 10
    • Windows 10 S

Cause

S mode is created for smaller versions of Windows 10 that prevents the machine from downloading any programs other than applications available in the Microsoft Application Store. This mode can be turned off, but this may also cause the machine to run slowly. In order to turn this mode back on you would have to reset your computer.

Resolution

Not all computers are able to switch to Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro free of charge; some computers may require you to purchase a Windows 10 license from the Microsoft Store in order to switch out of Windows 10 S Mode.
  1. Right click on the Start button  and select Settings.
  2. Click Update & Security.
  3. Select Activation.
  4. In the Switch to Windows 10 Home or Switch to Windows 10 Pro section, select Go to the Store
Note: If you also see an Upgrade your edition of Windows section, be careful not to click the Go to the Store link that appears there.
  5. On the Switch out of S mode (or similar) page that appears in the Microsoft Store, select the Get button.
  6. After you see a confirmation message on the page, you'll be able to install apps from outside of the Microsoft Store.
  7. If you are unable to switch out of Windows 10 S Mode, please contact the ITS Service Desk.
