File Explorer Not Allowing Preview of Microsoft Office Files

Issue/Question

I cannot preview Microsoft Office files in the preview pane of File Explorer.

Environment

  • Windows 11

Cause

By default, Microsoft Office files are in Protected Mode.

Resolution

Please be aware that turning off these settings will lessen the security built into the Protected Mode of Microsoft Office.
  1. In File Explorer, enable the Preview Pane, by clicking on View in the menu bar.
  2. Select Show, then check Preview Pane.
Note: If you receive an error message that the previewer for the application cannot show preview, then the document is in Protected Mode. To disable the Protected Mode setting, continue to following the instructions.
  3. Open the application and go to File, then click Options.
  4. In the left pane, click Trust Center, then Trust Center Settings.
  5. In the left pane, click Protected View and uncheck all Protected Mode settings.
  6. Reopen File Explorer and the Preview Pane will be enabled for that application.
