Compatible Monitors, Adapters, and Cables for Thunderbolt 3 Macs

Issue/Question

I have a Mac with Thunderbolt 3 connections. What kind of monitor can I connect to it?

Resolution

Apple makes adapters to connect monitors with VGA and HDMI inputs. Other common inputs include DVI, DisplayPort and mini DisplayPort. Though Apple does not make adapters for these, many third-party companies do. Before purchasing a cable or adapter, ensure that it indicates that it is compatible with your Mac.

Note: If you have one of Apple's previous monitor adapters (i.e. Mini DisplayPort to VGA and Mini DisplayPort to DVI), it cannot be used in tandem with the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter, as the display signal is not passed through the adapter.
