Installing Apps Not From the App Store

Issue/Question

I downloaded a program from the web, but when I try to open it, I get an error:

"[Application Name]" can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.

Cause

By default, apps not from the App Store are blocked from opening.

Resolution

To Enable Identified Publishers

  1. Click the Apple menu item.
  2. Select System Preferences... .
  3. Click Security & Privacy.
  4. Click the lockpad.
  5. Enter your account password and click OK.
  6. Select Mac App Store and identified developers.
  7. Try opening the app again. If the error continues, continue below.

To Allow All Apps

  1. Follow steps 1 through 5 above.
  2. Select Anywhere.
  3. The app can now open.
