Using the Privileges App to Install Software on WKU-Owned Macs

Issue/Question

I am unable to install software on my WKU-owned Mac because I am prompted for an administrator account. My credentials do not work, or the Privileges app is missing or not working.

Environment

  • WKU-owned Macs

Cause

Standard user accounts on WKU-owned Macs do not have administrator rights. The Privileges application allows users to temporarily grant themselves admin rights for software installation. Some Macs may not have the Privileges app in the Dock, may not have it installed, or may have an outdated/bugged version.

Resolution

Option 1: If the Privileges app is in your Dock

  1. Locate and click the (Privileges) icon in the Dock.
  2. Select Request Privileges.
  3. Return to the software installation prompt and enter your computer username and password.
  4. When finished, click the icon in the Dock and select Remove Privileges.
Note: If privileges are not removed, you will receive periodic reminders asking whether they are still needed.

Option 2: If the Privileges app is NOT in your Dock

  1. Click the magnifying glass  at the top right of the screen to open Spotlight Search.
  2. Type Privileges. If it appears, open it.
  3. If the app opens successfully, follow the steps in Option 1.

Option 3: If the Privileges app is missing or will not open

  1. Open Spotlight Search by clicking the magnifying glass icon.
  2. Type self-service and open the first application that appears.
  3. When Self-Service loads, choose Your Apps from the left sidebar.
  4. Scroll the list or use the search box to locate Privileges2.
  5. Click Install Now to install the Privileges app. Allow a few minutes for completion.
  6. After installation, open the Privileges app from the Applications folder or Spotlight Search.
  7. (Optional) Drag the app to the Dock for easier future access.
  8. Run the Privileges app and select Request Privileges. You may now enter your credentials when prompted during software installation.
