Installing Software that Uses System Extensions

Issue/Question

When I try to install an app I get a message similar to:

System Extension Blocked

A program tried to load new system extension(s). If you want to enable these extensions, open Security & Privacy System Preferences.

Environment

  • macOS 10.13+ (High Sierra+)

Cause

System extensions can access operating system files. To prevent unauthorized access, macOS High Sierra and newer require explicit permission to install software that uses system extensions.

Resolution

WKU-owned Macs setup by ITS since January 2019 need an exception created for the software before the installation can succeed. Please contact the ITS Service Desk or submit a service request by clicking the Request Service button.
  1. Verify you recognize and trust the software being installed. If you do not, contact the ITS Service Desk.
  2. From the installation warning, click Open Security Preferences.
  3. Click the General tab.
  4. Click Allow.
  5. Return to the software installer and complete the installation.
